>> live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> investigators are trying to find out what led to a deadly explosion at this military base in nevada that killed seven marines and injured several others. good morning. a marine corps -- the marine corps is notifying families of the loss of their loves one at the hawthorne army depot

southeast of reno, never. eric? >> the accident killed seven marines and sent eight to the hospital. the marine corps immediately ordered the mortars and shells out of service world-wide until they are determined to be safe. the marines were fire add mortar like this during a night-training exercise at the haw thunderstorm army depot where the services store ammunition. something went terribly wrong. we had an accident the it had nothing do with our ammunition mission here. it was an accident that happened with the marines that were training down here. >> the blast was strong enough to kill or injure everyone 30 yards. >> we do not know exactly what happened but it was a violent explosion. we know that. marines all over the world are now focusing on the loss of their fellow marines. >> the mortar is a short-range weapon that fires explosive

rounds. a theory is a round unexpectedly exploded possibly inside the mortar tube. the marines were from camp lejeune, north carolina and came here for training that usually precedes deployment to the middle east. the white house spokesman gave the president condolences. >> the president's thoughts and prayers goes to the family of those who were lost and injured. we are obviously in the early stage of assessing the incident. >> one hospital took in eight patients, five are in serious condition. the identities of the seven killed will not be released until 24 hours after their families are notified. the investigation is underway. back to you, ladies. >> here is what we know of hawthorne army depot. the military considers it an ideal training facility to prepare for deployment because the desert terrain at haw northbound -- hawthorne is

will be more significant project since both areas will need to be demolished. she hoped to re-open the restaurant in mid-april but that is unlikely to happen now. >> relatives of a san jose man shot to death by police are outraged this morning. the officers say the man in a stolen car tried to run down an officer last night and ram him with a car last night. cornell bernard is in east san jose with an interview with the man's family. >> we are learning more of the officer-involved shooting which happened not far from here. the suspect is dead and the family is telling us they are outraged and demand answers from police. >> a white honda civic is towed away from the crime scene. the san jose police say it was stolen during a monday night chase. the driver used the car as a weapon, ramming undercover police cars, parked cars and trying to run down a police officer. >> the officer gave him commands

to stop. the suspect continues to drive and accelerate. that is when the officer fired a shot toward the suspect the. >> the suspect was shot once in the head and killed. neighbors ran for cover. >> i heard the gunshots and ducked in the car. i didn't want do get shot. >> police are not revealing the name of the suspect but the family tells abc7 news it is 26 -year-old. police served a search warrant on the hoes where he lived with his mother. >> police say he tried to run an officer down last night. >> it is okay to shoot him in the middle of the forehead? that is not okay. could have shot him in the arm. their intention was to kill. that is what they d ought family is demanding a meeting with police. there was a passenger in the car with the suspect. he is considered a witness at this point and is cooperating with police.

during a two--hour period this morning, 56 people died and more than 200 were wounded in a string of car bombings. march 19, 2003, former president george w. bush ordered a military invasion to topple saddam hussein. >> american and coalition forces are in the early stages to disarm iraq, to free its people, and to defend the world from grave danger. >> 10 years later many iraqis complain they still lack basic services such as electricity and water but other parts of iraq are thriving with new shopping malls and luxury car show rooms. the last u.s. combat troops last iraq in 2011 and killed over 4,000 troops. a tribute continues in the east bay to those soldiers and those killed in afghanistan.

amy? >> the crosses have quite an impact. look at them behind me. they were not always popular. the founder of them is reflecting, today, on the 0th anniversary and is amazed at impact the crosses have had and what he and the volunteers who created this have endured. >> it has made a big difference. i see it in the face of people who come by and visit the memorial. >> jeff started putting up the crosses a protest to the war in iraq and they have lasted through vandalism and protests and heated arguments. 10 years later, the crosses have evolved into more than just a political statement. >> it truly is a memorial, the only memorial of its kind that i know in the united states. >> public opinion has evolved, too, this morning, walnut creek resident and veteran, amanda, stopped by after seeing news coverage of this anniversary. >> when i first saw the memorial growing up a few years ago i thought it was disrespectful to the fallen in an absurd eyesore

and i didn't realize that he had genuine motives behind it until this morning so i decided to stop by (a) to pay my respects to the fallen and (b) to apologize. >> the idea to was to erect a cross for every soldier. they reached 4,000 and they relied this we could not keep up anymore and mark deaths with this sign. jeff is not sure what will happen next. >> i feel that there should be at host some permanent memorial that should stay here in lafayette. >> he says the land owners have died and passed this on to their children and jeff says one of the heirs mentioned building veteran housing here but he says the rest of the family has been quiet about what to do here, the housing was just an idea so he says stay tuned, it is unclear what will happen to the few acres here in lafayette.

>> from the east coast, police responded to a shooting at an allentown, pennsylvania, hospital. our sister station, wpvi in philadelphia reports the coroner has been called to the lehigh valley high school. it is not clear what the extent of the casualties are but the situation is contained and that no one else is in danger. it appears the incident happened on the 4th floor hospice wing of the facility. we will update the story when we learn more. >> vatican officials say before he became pope francis, cardinal bergoglio took the first step to granting sainthood to six priests murdered in 1996 in his homeland of argentina. today was dominated by the

answered, when will you be affected? it is all outside of our neighborhoods until you get to mendocino county, along the coast there. cloverdale has been dry, and putting it in motion you can see the last three hours, that wall of water is working more to the east than it is to the south or southeast so we will have to wait for the line to fill in before we get our chance of organized wet weather. that will probably be as we head toward the later part of the afternoon moistening the air and the says hanging out because of the extra moisture. we look down from mount tamalpais, san francisco is at 60, and right new we are at 61 in palo alto and oakland and mill valley at 62. san jose is 63. check out walnut creek, it is 67 degrees already. san jose is looking nice out here as we look at 87 near the h.p. pavilion and santa rosa and napa in the upper 50's and same thing in hayward, and fairfield at 53 and los gatos at 67

degrees. today, we are going to see the sky become more gray, with sprinkles developing and changing over to scattered light rain. we will have the unsettled weather through tomorrow, and real spring warmth headed into the first weekend in the spring. >> here is what is happening, high pressure is pushing down to the south but it is directing most of this energy to the north and a very mature system that has lost its energy with a lot of moisture coming from hawaii but not a lot of lift in the atmosphere to create it. we have a moist and mild flow. we were mild this morning and comfortable this afternoon and the reason we will be warmer tomorrow morning is because of that. with the thicker clouds, watch as the sprinkles develop across the north bay this afternoon, and you can see a better pocket of light rain at 5:00 and, also, along the peninsula coast, and as we head through the evening showers, we will have some sprinkles and light rain from time to time at at&t park but it will not be that heavy.

we will probably get the game in with no problems and maybe not a delay. through the evening hours, it is still just scattered sprinkles through tomorrow morning and then the more organized wet weather, the window of possibly steady, light rain, moving through the north bay during the morning commute and the heart of the bay as we head to noon and headed down and exiting the south bay after 2:00, you can see the scattered showers after that and clearing as we head to wednesday night into thursday. we have our fingers crossed we can get up to .5". because the system is coming from the west we will get a lot of rain in the santa clara valley, but just a slight amount. the not -- north bay, your mountains will lift the air and create some of the rain for you. there you go. as far as our only storm system on the seven-day outlook, that is it. temperatures are still fairly mild at 50's from the coast and low do mid 60's for the rest of us and 70's inland, that will be
